K4/K5 Curriculum

Our K4 and K5 programs are specifically designed to respect the individual developmental needs of young students. Carefully paced multi-modality learning broadens a student’s knowledge base and conceptual understanding, moving from the concrete to the symbolic, in the areas of language and math. Bible instruction together with “classroom life” experiences give opportunities to grow spiritually, socially and emotionally.

We respect the “inner clock of a child.” Careful observation and assessment in K5 together with whole group and individualized instruction permit children to proceed in academic areas at their optimum moments of acquisition to ensure success and a continual love for learning.

The goal of Summit’s kindergarten program is to lay firm foundations and increase readiness in all areas of development so that students may enter first grade confidently. Subject areas for the K5 program include Bible, phonics, math, social studies and science. Teachers make use of art, music and movement in their lessons

1st - 6th Curriculum

At the Grammar stage students receive solid instruction to establish conceptual understanding along with the facts and rules of each discipline. A strong phonetic approach to reading ensures proper decoding, eliminating the frustration of guessing. The reading of authentic literature of various styles together with a strong composition component builds vocabulary and writing skills. Other subjects such as Bible, English grammar, math, spelling, Latin (third through eighth grades), history and science are taught classically using songs, rhymes, chants, drill and repetition to aid with the learning of important rules and facts. Numerous hands-on projects and field trips enhance the learning experience. Higher level thinking is encouraged in all subjects.

Summit also places an emphasis on the arts and physical education. Students are instructed in both art and music as well as participating in art fairs and school-wide performances. PE classes are held twice a week. Fifth and sixth graders may participate in extra curricular team sports competing with other schools in the Hampton Roads area.

We make use of an eclectic selection of textbook publishers, both Christian and secular, declaring again in our choice of books that truth, wherever it may be found, is God’s truth.

Summit Christian Academy seeks to glorify God in all we do, including our decision to wear school uniforms. Uniforms promote modesty, unity, and respect while helping students focus on inward character rather than outward appearance. They simplify daily routines, reduce worldly influences, and reflect a visible oneness in Christ that honors both individuality and community.
